PROJECT DETAILS:
Canada's road network is the 7th largest in the world with just over 1,000,000 km (PIARC, 2015). About 95% of paved roads are bituminous pavements. According to the Canadian Infrastructure Report Card (Canada Infrastructure, 2016), more than 25% of municipal roads are in fair, poor or very poor condition. Several countries use high concentrations of recycled bituminous aggregates (RBA) in road construction. However, in Quebec, the MTQ allows only 20% recycled because of our winter conditions.
In order to take full advantage of the financial and environmental benefits of adding RBA, it is essential to have a formulation and characterization method specially adapted for asphalt mixes with RBA. To do this, in addition to increasing knowledge in the field of bituminous materials (rheology, formulation, thermal analysis) and the training of 7 HQP, the main objective of this collaborative research is to develop a method for formulating asphalt. with high RBA content for cold regions like Canada.
More specifically, it is proposed to work with recycled asphalt containing up to 50% RBA and to demonstrate the properties in a real situation on a road in Quebec to be presented to decision makers.
